Technology:
Ableton Live / Audacity / GarageBand

Description:
Scored a soundtrack to a one minute long clip from the film Metropolis. The track had to use a combination of our own collected sounds and samples. We also had to pay attention to detail like the breath of textures/frequencies, subtlety of timing, layers, spatialisation, silence, and noise.

PanoConsulting made it using software they had never used before. Audacity was used to prepare the raw sounds that were had recorded using the in-built microphone in an Apple PowerBook laptop. Audacity is software that is a free, open source, cross platform digital audio editor.

GarageBand, that is a music software application for Apple computers was also used. PanoConsulting took advantage of the synthesized instruments and the on-screen keyboard to record various notes.

To piece everything together Ableton Live was used. PanoConsulting manipulated various effects to edit there sounds so they fitted into the soundtrack. Ableton Live was used to piece the soundtrack together as Ableton Live is aimed at professionals whilst GarageBand is aimed at amateurs so Ableton Live gave PanoConsulting more control over what the soundtrack would eventually sound like.

Finally, the soundtrack was rendered to a hard drive from Ableton Live in a 'wav' file format. The video clip was dragged into GarageBand followed by the soundtrack and the video integrated with the soundtrack was exported in a 'mov' file format.

Conclusion:
PanoConsulting are really pleased with the finished sound mix especially considering that they had no prior experience of sound software. PanoConsulting believe it is dramatic with a good range of sounds that compliments the narrative that unfolds in the video clip.
